When it comes to cancer, many people are overwhelmed by fear, confusion, and the flood of misinformation online. Let’s take a step back and focus on what science really says, so we can face cancer with confidence, strength, and hope.
To guide us through this, Dr. Caren Andexer, Managing Director of IHPSG & MY, shares key insights based on science and clinical experience. As an internist with 13 years of hands-on practice, and a PhD in Pharmacology and Therapeutics from RCSI Ireland, Dr. Caren offers clear and practical advice on how we can face cancer with a positive attitude, and a healthy way of living.
✅ What Causes Cancer – And What Doesn’t
Cancer happens when cells in the body grow uncontrollably. While people often link cancer to a wide range of things, it's important to know what's backed by scientific evidence.
Proven risk factors:
- Processed Meat (like meatballs, sausages, and ham): Regular consumption has been linked to certain types of cancer, particularly colorectal cancer.
- Alcohol: Excess intake of alcohol can increase the risk of several cancers, including breast, liver, and mouth cancer.
What about other so-called “causes”?
There’s no strong scientific evidence that everyday things like microwaves, plastic containers, or stress directly cause cancer. These are mostly myths or exaggerated fears. While it’s good to be mindful, we shouldn’t live in constant fear of things that have little to no proven impact.
🥦 Prevention Through Lifestyle
You have more power than you think. Living a healthy lifestyle plays a huge role in lowering your cancer risk.
- Eat well: Focus on fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein. A balanced diet provides essential nutrients that support your body and strengthen immune function.
- Exercise regularly: At least 30 minutes a day with simple activities like walking or stretching can improve your overall health.
- Go for health screenings annually: Early detection saves lives. Regular check-ups help catch problems early, when treatment is most effective.
🧑⚕️Diagnosed with Cancer – What’s Next?
A cancer diagnosis can feel like the world is crumbling. However, with early detection and proper care, many cancers can be well controlled and managed over time.
Treatments may include:
- Surgery to remove tumours.
- Chemotherapy to kill or stop the growth of cancer cells.
- Radiation therapy to target cancer with high-energy rays.
- Targeted therapies & immunotherapy which are newer treatments that focus on specific cancer cells or boost the body’s immune response.
Every patient’s treatment journey is different. It’s important to consult with your doctor and stay proactive about your condition. Regular check-ups will help monitor your progress and ensure your treatment plan is adjusted as needed for the best possible outcome.
💪 Keep Living, Keep Going
One of the best things you can do is to keep living your life fully, just like you would if cancer was not part of the picture.
- Stay active with your work or daily activities: Keeping up with your usual routines helps maintain a sense of normalcy and purpose. It also keeps your mind focused and engaged.
- Spend time with loved ones: Being around family and friends can bring comfort, joy, and emotional support, which are all important for healing and mental well-being.
- Fill your days with meaningful things to do: Do things that bring you happiness, whether it’s a hobby, volunteering, or learning something new. Staying mentally engaged can lift your spirits.
- Avoid falling into fear or isolation: It’s normal to feel scared but try not to let fear take over. Reach out, talk to others, and stay connected because you’re not alone in this journey.
Mental well-being plays a big part in physical recovery. A positive and active life can boost your overall well-being during recovery, both emotionally and physically.
💡 Final Thoughts
Let’s focus on facts, not fear. Protect your health with healthy choices, stay active, and get regular check-ups. If cancer becomes part of your journey, remember that there is help, hope, and healing. You are never alone in this fight.
